I much agree with the DC cartoons set up.

Is "Dragon Age" by itself an umbrella, or meant to be Dragon Age: Origins? (I suggest the latter.)

I also would like to recommend splitting The Witcher into Witcher 1, Witcher 2, Witcher 3, and Witcher books.

I was thinking that both the Dangan Ronpa and Pokemon games should go under one main umbrella for each series, just like they have in previous years, and each Fire Emblem should be separate, if everyone else agrees?
cypher: (my aim is true)

I'm not in the first two, so no opinion there, but definitely agreed that Fire Emblem titles should be separate.

That Tolkien division looks good to me. I like having the books and movies separate.

DR-
That sounds alright to me.

Pokémon-
Whoops! I meant to say just the main game series!

FE-
I don't think any of them should be grouped, but I only know the 3DS games, so I'll let others weigh in!

Binding Blade and Blazing Sword probably make sense together; they're in the same continuity about a generation apart.

Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are very closely related, enough that they share a canonical tag on AO3 -- RD is a three-years-later sequel to PoR.

Most of the others I think are distinct enough to be solitary titles? But somebody who knows the older parts of the series better than I do should feel free to correct me.

Fire Emblem Heroes is another slightly weird case to keep an eye out for in nominations; it's the series' phone game and is a big crossover of characters from the different worlds in the series, so there might be character duplications -- basically the same issue as MCU and Avengers Academy.

Under your main header you don't have Dragon Age: Origins, just:
Dragon Age
Dragon Age II
Dragon Age: Inquisition

With the Witcher, books and games are different, and different characters appear in the various games. I can't speak to the books as I haven't read them. But for example looking at characters on the most recent page under the Witcher tag: Iorveth and Anezka only appear in the second game, Regis and Detlaff appear only in the third game (actually only in a DLC), Olgierd also in the third game (a different DLC), Tomira in the third game, and so on.

But I will grant that it's all canonically one tag on AO3 (well, two, one for the books and one for the games) and since matching is on character it should not make a huge difference.

I just want to express my support and general goodwill towards the pumpkin king for making 90s Sailor Moon anime its own fandom.

jordannamorgan: Edward Elric, "Fullmetal Alchemist". (FMA Alchemist)

[personal profile] jordannamorgan 2017-08-18 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Not sure if this applies in this category setup, but "Fullmetal Alchemist" should differentiate between Anime 2003 and Brotherhood & Manga. The two versions go in completely different directions, and authors tend to want to write only one or the other.

Also just want to make sure that A Song of Ice and Fire books and Game of Thrones TV will be separate. They're separated in every exchange I've ever seen and plot and characters differ immensely.

Sorry, this got long ...

Star Wars:

What about the material that bridges between trilogies (e.g. Aftermath, various comics)? Or should we just nominate under whichever of the headings fits best in terms of timeline/shared characters?

Also, I think there probably needs to be a separate category for Legends and/or stuff set in the past/future. (The specific examples I'm thinking of are the Knights of the Old Republic games, which take place ~4000 BBY, in what in Legends was the Old Republic era but in the new timeline is before the Republic even got started, and the Legacy comics which are set a century after the Original Trilogy, in the Legends timeline. Neither of those would be a comfortable fit in any of the categories you've already got. A single "Legends" fandom would probably be OK, but it could be split down further if desired.)

Doctor Who:

Very minor thing, but the revived version is (2005), not (2004).

I'm assuming the various spinoffs from the interregnum should be nominated under (1963)?

There are some characters who could appear under more than one of those categories (Sarah Jane is the obvious example, having been in three of the four, including being the title character of one). Presumably that will be OK with proper disambiguation.

Also, I don't know if it's likely to get any nominations, but there is a more recent spinoff: Class.

[Finally, is anon commenting off deliberately?]

Ah, right, if these are non-exhaustive lists that all makes a lot more sense. Thanks!

I'm not a fan of splitting the Dragon Age games up because many of the characters could be nominated for multiple games, and I feel that would create unnecessary redundancy. I also disagree with the person above wanting the Witcher games split up for much the same reason.

Edit: Would you consider allowing people to nominate relationships this year?

Agreed on both games. I can kind of see why some loosely connected franchises might be split by title, but the Dragon Age and Witcher games don't feel sufficiently independent from each other that it merits nominating the same character multiple times. Details of whether one wants to read about eg. Culllen in Ferelden, in Kirkwall, or in the Inquisition could go in notes/prompts, without having to request him as a character three separate times.

I suggest all three tags for Love Live! fandoms be used:
- Love Live! School Idol Project - original anime/manga characters
- Love Live! Sunshine!! - Sunshine!! characters
- Love Live! School Idol Festival (Video Game) - game-only characters

Thirded! Though I'm wondering where intra-canon crossovers should go, such as, say, Galadriel (specifically from the LotR Books at the end of the Third Age)/Varda (Silmarillion "goddess" of stars)? Normal crossovers, or would it be okay to nominate under either canon?

There's a webcomic called Stand Still, Stay Silent, which recently spawned a spinoff computer game, City of Hunger, that'll be playable in alpha mode soon (within two or three weeks, though not all of the plot may be revealed yet). It's something of a canon AU, with the same cast of characters as the original comic, but set in a sci-fi future on an ice planet, not a post-apocalypse fantasy adventure. AO3 is currently handling its tag as synonymous with SSSS.

I think I'd prefer it to be handled seperately because the setup is so different, and some of the characters are in very different roles dependent on the circumstances, and (according to the creator), prior knowledge of SSSS canon is not necessary for understanding CoH, but at the same time the cast is the same... which is to say, I'll go with whatever the consensus is when nominations start.
