The Basics

Trick or Treat is an exchange in the style of exchanges like Yuletide or Chocolate Box. It is inspired by a real world holiday, but you do not need to celebrate Halloween to participate in this exchange.

Each participant will receive at least one gift. The gift will be a trick or a treat, and gift minimums are 300 words for fic or a nice sketch for art. A trick should be more horror, occult, supernatural, or scary. A treat should be more sweet, sexy, or fluffy. These are a bit vague to give the writer/artist room for how they interpret trick or treat.

Participants must be 18 years or older.

[See previous post for details on our AO3 outage delay]

Your keen detective work leads you through the quaint pumpkin patches and spooky murder sheds of Halloweenland, to the (insert ominous music) graaaaaveyard.

A bit of stress hastens your steps. Halloween is here, and the Spirit of Halloween requires their bride. You expect another careful investigation leading to the next clue.

But upon arrival, you find less a clue than a clearly posted solution: a wide path stomped into the woods by large feet, strewn with chocolate wrappers and sparkly dildos.

You call the Spirit of Halloween—and the Halloweenland Beautification Committee to pick up the chocolate wrappers and sex toys—and set forth.

Twenty minutes later, behind a creepy caramel apple orchard, you find Detective Pumpkin herself. She's standing up from a cauldron, unwrapping herself from a string of blinking lights.

"Trick or Treaters!" Detective Pumpkin says, clearly relieved. "You're just in time. We have a mystery to solve."

No shit, you all think. That's what this whole community challenge is about. But before you can ask Detective Pumpkin what she's doing, the Spirit of Halloween appears in a whirl of bats and bonbons.

"My beloved!" the Spirit cries, and rushes forward.

When the public display of affection concludes, Detective Pumpkin asks, "What's wrong? Oh... oh dear. I lost track of time. It's not..."

"It's October 31st," the Spirit says. "Halloween, and the day of our wedding, yes. But that's not what matters. Are you all right? What happened?"

Detective Pumpkin sighs. "I was abducted by Cupid, Kinky the Smut Fairy, and seven hippos. It was all supposed to be very complicated. A multi-step mystery that would have taken our investigators several rounds of tags to solve. But they were still debating where to hide me, when they all vanished."

You recognize the names. Deities of the greatest, most sacred holidays of all: fanwork exchanges. A chill runs down your spines.

"The Great Archive has disappeared," Detective Pumpkin says, clutching the Spirit of Halloween's appendages. "My spooky darling..."

"I know," the Spirit of Halloween says, their voice hardening. "Today may be October 31, but our wedding will be on Halloween, and Halloween is whenever I say it is. I declare that Halloween is postponed until the mystery of the vanishing archive is solved, and every exchange returns to the land."

Overwhelmed by her darling Spirit's investigative spirit, Detective Pumpkin throws herself forward. The public display of affection resumes.

Happy October 31st, Trick or Treat community! Here's to a speedy AO3 restoration and rescheduled Halloween.

Per the OTW status page, AO3 is currently down for maintenance, projected to last two to four weeks.

Unfortunately, this makes Halloween work reveals impossible.

I'm currently pushing Trick or Treat dates back by about two weeks. Remaining pinch hits are due Nov 12, work reveals Nov 14, and creator reveals Nov 21.

However, we'll need a few days of functioning archive pre-reveals, so pinch hitters can post and so I can confirm everything is in. I'll post again on November 10 to confirm whether we're good to proceed or need to delay further.

Thank you to the assigned creators and pinch hitters who've left us in such good shape going into this delay. We won't have much scrambling to do once the archive is back :)

In the meantime...

- We have one more pinch hit available at the latest pinch hit post. Please claim this either logged-in to Dreamwidth or with a contact email so I can confirm your claim, and I'll assign them via AO3 when possible.

- Requests are still viewable via the handy auto app, so you can spend the extra time preparing treats!

- I believe one of the Community Challenge tags, Ghosts, had reached 20 works yesterday. So, I'll post an amended challenge update on the 31st :)

- If you have IRL plans to celebrate Halloween, please share in the comments below! Tell us about your costumes, your decorations, your sweet or spooky desserts.

One last thing...

Timely reveals are especially important for holiday exchanges. Since its first round in 2014, Trick or Treat has never delayed past Halloween. (*time zone dependent.) I've been proud to continue that track record since I took the gourdly crown in 2021. Through the tremendous efforts of pinch hitters—fellow participants, kindly strangers, friends I gently harass to help—our tricks and treats have always been ready on October 31.

I'm sad to break the streak this year, but that only highlights how impressive it is. Thank you, everyone, who's made that possible!

Current Mood: determined

pumpkinkingmod

UPDATE OCT 29: AO3 is currently down for maintenance, and unfortunately may be down for some time. I'll update the community with a delay plan soon. In the meantime, pinch hits are still claimable, and you can browse the requests apps for treating while the archive is down.

---

There is a fresh batch of hits that must be pinched in order for our Halloween revels to proceed on time. Thank you so much to everyone who has pinch hit so far!

To claim, please comment on this post with your AO3 name and the number or name of the pinch hit you would like. Comments are screened. Pinch hits are first-come, first-serve, ~~and if you're the first to claim, you'll receive the assignment to your email.~~

Please either comment logged-in or with a contact email so I can confirm you've got it. I'll officially assign claims when AO3 is back online.

You don't have to be signed up to Trick or Treat to claim a pinch hit.

Pinch hits are due ~~October 30,~~ November 12, 17:59 UTC (1:59 PM EDT).

Excellent work, community detectives! You've reached 20+ works tagged Flowers or Costumes, and therefore finished interviewing makeup artist Nickelsmart and haberdasher Hellicent.

No need to continue to baker Catherine Catrina Catalina, because Hellicent has revealed that Detective Pumpkin never showed up for her suit-fitting.

Detective Pumpkin must have gone missing between the salon and the haberdashery. Please investigate the following local landmarks along the route to identify the crime scene.

***

To investigate, create a work with the tag assigned to that location. This can be your assignment or an extra treat for anyone whose requests lend themselves to the tag. To report your findings, post the work to the Trick or Treat 2026 collection. You may add the tag to applicable works you've already created.

Once a location's tag reaches 20 works, the Spirit of Halloween will review the evidence and announce the next step of the investigation.

The possible crime scenes are:

A local cemetery
Tag: Ghosts

A local Fall Festival
Tag: Carnival

A very very small local bookstore
Tag: Forced Proximity

See the community challenge introduction for more details.

Current Mood: thirsty

pumpkinkingmod

'tis a dark and stormy night when you arrive at Trick or Treat manor. Just there, mind you. The rest of the neighborhood has pretty clear skies. But furious stormclouds flit about the manor, reflecting the Spirit of Halloween's wrath. You're careful to keep the casefiles from getting wet.

(Review the case details and challenge format at this post.)

The weeping banshee housekeeper escorts you to the familiar parlor, where the Spirit of Halloween awaits.

The Spirit appears in many guises. A spooky witch or a ghostly clown or a slutty traffic cone. Whatever you think when you think "Halloween," that's how they appear to you.

But whatever their form, tonight, they're clutching a sensible tweed jacket that you last saw on Detective Pumpkin.

The Spirit wastes no time with pleasantries. "My fiancée went missing while running wedding errands," they explain. "I've found her schedule for the day. Please interview witnesses at each of these locations and report back."

They hand out the details, then return to hugging the tweed jacket and pacing back and forth. (Or floating back and forth, if you're imagining them as a sexy ghostly traffic cone.)

***

To investigate, create a work with the tag assigned to that location. This can be your assignment or an extra treat for anyone whose requests lend themselves to the tag. To report your findings, post the work to the Trick or Treat 2026 collection.

Once a location's tag reaches 20 works, the Spirit of Halloween will review the evidence and announce the next step of the investigation.

The possible last known sighting locations are:

Nickelsmart's Not Nasty Salon
Tag: Flowers

Hellicent's Haunted Haberdashery
Tag: Costumes

Cakes by Catherine Catrina Catalina the Cat
Tag: Knives

Once upon a time (two years ago), the Spirit of Halloween was murdered.

But they got better, thanks to the tireless work of Detective Pumpkin, with the aid of the trusty Trick or Treat Community.

The story ended with the resurrection of the Spirit of Halloween, the apprehension of the culprit Velmarina Vampire, and the culmination of the love story between the Spirit of Halloween and Detective Pumpkin.

(please review the 2024 Community Challenge posts for more detail: intro post, and October overview)

Detective Pumpkin and the Spirit of Halloween have spent the past two years in romantic bliss, enjoying all life's tricks and treats together. It was no surprise to anyone in Halloweenland when the wedding announcement arrived.

The wedding was scheduled for October 31, 2026, two years after the resurrection and love confession. And, dear Trick or Treat participant, this post should have been your invitation to the wedding.

But disaster has struck again.

Detective Pumpkin has been kidnapped.

You are once more tasked with solving a mystery. And if Detective Pumpkin is not returned by the wedding date, the Spirit of Halloween will make sure nobody can enjoy tricks and treats this spooky season.

Investigation Process

Solving the case requires three pieces of information:

- The last confirmed witness sighting
- The location of the crime scene
- The identity of the kidnapper

The Spirit of Halloween will conduct the preliminary investigation, and you will receive a set of three leads to investigate. The clues will be found in order -- you will find the last witness before unlocking leads about the crime scene, and you will find the crime scene before unlocking leads about the kidnapper.

You will investigate by creating works for the 2026 Trick or Treat collection, tagged with the correct tag for the lead you're investigating. Once you (collectively) post a certain number works for a lead, the Spirit of Halloween will review your investigation and report whether it's a real Clue or a Red Herring. Once you find the real clue, the next set of leads will unlock.

-----------------------

EXAMPLE YULETIDE INVESTIGATION:
*this is a fictional example. To my knowledge, the Spirit of Yuletide has not been murdered.

Detective Snowflake has narrowed down the crime scene to three possible locations in Dancing Hippo Tower.

The Snowy Forest
- Post 20 works tagged "Forest" to investigate

The Cozy Kitchen
- Post 20 works tagged "Cooking" to investigate

The Yule Mods' Secret Ritual Cavern
- Post 20 works tagged "Darkness" to investigate.

Participants reach 20 works tagged Darkness first. Detective Snowflake reviews the evidence and determines The Yule Mods' Secret Ritual Cavern is a Red Herring, so the investigation continues.

Participants next reach 20 works tagged "Forest," and Detective Snowflake reports that's the correct Clue. The crime scene has been found, so participants don't have to finish the third crime scene lead.

Detective Snowflake then reveals the next set of leads, to figure out the murder weapon, and the case continues along the same pattern.

-----------------------

The Spirit of Halloween will have the first set of leads ready on October 1. In the meantime, please ask any questions on this post, so we can clarify any procedural confusion in advance!

Two more days until signups open! I'm down to the final few pending nominations. Which means I have a few more questions for nominators below.

CHARACTER CLARIFICATIONS

Crossover Fandom
Ship: Sergei Kravinoff (Kraven the Hunter)/Tangerine (Bullet Train)/Reader
Please pick a fandom for Reader — Any Fandom? RPF?

イース | Ys (Video Games)
Is Bergar the same as Belger?

ALL MEDIA TYPES / RELATED FANDOMS / SERIES
Please choose a more specific version of the following fandoms.

Green Lantern - All Media Types
If this is for comics, should fall under DC (Comics).

Hunger Games Series - All Media Types
The books are already nominated separately as Hunger Games Trilogy - Suzanne Collins.

(I'll likely be combining the trilogy with the already-approved BOSAS as "Hunger Games Novels - Suzanne Collins," to handle the overlapping nominations there. Sorry for any confusion about the BOSAS approval.)

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Series
Trails into Reverie and Trails through Daybreak are already in.

RESOLVED

Twilight Series - All Media Types
Twilight Series - Stephenie Meyer is nominated separately.

Library of Ruina (Video Game)
Ship: Angela (Lobotomy Corporation)/Roland (Library of Ruina)
Ship: Angela/Binah (Lobotomy Corporation)
These characters are disambiguated with a different game in the series. How standalone are the installments—should these tags be moved to Crossover Fandom, or should the games be nominated as a series?
Or if Angela and Binah appear in Library of Ruina, I can just change the disambiguations.

pumpkinkingmod

Nominations close in about 12 hours! Please don't worry if your nominations haven't been processed yet—the upcoming three-day gap in the schedule is there for a reason.

In the meantime, I do have questions or requests regarding the following nominations!

CHARACTER CONFIRMATION QUESTIONS

イース | Ys (Video Games)
Can you confirm the existence of Bergar? I can't find them anywhere.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Series

RESOLVED

The Magnus Archives (Podcast)
Elias Bouchard | Jonah Magnus
Jonathan "Jon" Sims | The Archivist
Michael | The Distortion

Fate/Grand Order
Ashiya Douman | Alter Ego
Asterios | Berserker

Fate/stay night (Visual Novel)
Ship: Archer (Heroic Spirit EMIYA)/Tohsaka Rin (F/sn VN)
Is Archer from a different canon? If so this should be nominated under crossovers.

Baby Corn Whisks to Whiskers
characters: 2 Dollar Bills, Baby Corn - Character, Corn, The Wind
Can you confirm whether all of these are characters, and which videos they appear in?

The book and movie are already in separately.

~~Star Wars Legends - All Media Types~~

~~Chronicles of Narnia - All Media Types~~

pumpkinkingmod

Welcome back to Trick or Treat! Nominations are open until September 8 at 17:59 UTC (1:59 PM EDT). Please read this post before nominating!

Countdown until nominations end.

Here is this year's tag set! You may nominate up to 8 fandoms with 8 characters or relationships in each.

Nominations format

You can nominate characters and/or relationships under each fandom you nominate. For AO3 matching algorithm reasons, both characters and relationships are nominated under the “Characters” slot in the tag set, and relationships should be specified by including “Ship:” in front of the pairing, whether romantic/sexual or platonic.

All fandoms in the tag set need to be nominated with at least one character or relationship tag under that fandom.

For all tags:
Please nominate original works under the fandom Original Work. If you don't specify a character's gender in the tag, you're leaving it up to the creator to choose.

Please avoid using pipes where possible and do not use diacritics/tone marks where unnecessary.

All character and ship nominations must be disambiguated. (See below for an explanation!)

Please use the name order as in the canon ("Given Name Family Name" for most western canons, "Family Name Given Name" for most Asian canons).

For relationship tags:
Relationships must include "Ship:" in front of the pairing.

You may nominate / or & relationships. "A/B" is a romantic or sexual relationship; "A & B" is a platonic relationship.

Please alphabetize ships by family name.

Please nominate crossovers under the fandom Crossover Fandom, with ships in the format:
Ship: Yuri Plisetsky (YOI) & Rajah (Aladdin).

You cannot nominate both / and & in a single tag. This means any nominations like "Ship: Aerith/Tifa & Cloud (FFVII)" will be rejected.

What is disambiguation?

This means adding the fandom in brackets after your nomination. Some examples:

Sakurayashiki Kaoru (SK8)
Leia Organa (SWOT)
Luke Skywalker (SWST)
Ship: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson (BBC Sherlock)
Ship: Sherlock Holmes/John Watson (Sherlock Holmes - ACD)
Ship: Mia Fey/Phoenix Wright (Ace Attorney)
Ship: Enoshima Junko/Tsumiki Mikan (DR Hope's Peak)
Ship: James "Bucky" Barnes & Steve Rogers (Marvel 616)

Before nominating, please check if your fandom is already in the tagset, and what disambiguations were used. Your nominations get approved faster if they are already in the correct format.

Specific Fandom Nomination Guidelines

All MCU movies and Marvel TV shows should be nominated under Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Dimension 20 campaigns should be nominated separately according to continuity.

Please nominate FFVII Remake/Rebirth separately from Compilation of FFVII.

Marvel Comics should be nominated by the characters' native universe, e.g. Marvel 616.

DC Comics should be nominated together under DCU (Comics). You may specify timeline (e.g. Pre-Flashpoint) in the disambiguation.

Arrowverse TV shows should be nominated together under DC's Arrowverse. Superman & Lois is separate.

All DCEU movies should be nominated together under DC Extended Universe.

Baldur's Gate games should be nominated together as Baldur's Gate (Video Games). "Tav" or "Dark Urge" are the main character of BG3. "Charname" is the main character of BG1 or 2. "Original Character(s)" are not player characters.

Buffyverse (TV) consists of the television shows for both Buffy the Vampire Slayer (TV) and Angel: The Series.

Doctor Who is divided between 1963, 2005, and Torchwood.

Danganronpa has the original continuity ("Danganronpa - Hope’s Peak Arc") while Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is separate.

Dragon Age should be nominated as Dragon Age - All Media Types.

Star Trek should be divided by show, with Star Trek: Alternate Original Series (Movies) separate.

Star Wars should be divided into Star Wars Prequel Trilogy, Star Wars Original Trilogy, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, the standalone movies, then the individual properties, e.g. The Mandalorian (TV).

Ace Attorney and The Great Ace Attorney are two separate fandoms. Please use localized names where applicable, i.e, "Miles Edgeworth" and "Herlock Sholmes."
