Community Challenge: Battle of the Bands

After last year’s more complex and intense community challenge, this one is going to be simpler for our new Pumpkin King. Battle of the Bands is a community challenge to make 200 works influenced by music.

Nominate your favorite songs to be part of the challenge.

When you sign up there are two ways to indicate your interest in participating in this challenge. The first is to request a song as a fandom or request non-song fandoms and then in optional details list what songs from the Battle of the Bands list you’d like to be used for inspiration (you can just opt in to any if you so choose). The second is for non-song fandoms say in your request that you are opting into Battle of the Bands and what songs from the list you are interested in.

Song nominations will close one hour after the normal tagset nominations.

The Battle of the Bands tagset will not be used in matching and will just be used as an easy way for us to compile a list of songs that participants are interested in for Battle of the Bands. You must nominate specific songs and not “Any Beatles Song”. You may nominate specific covers of a song.

Works for this should be tagged “ToT: Battle of the Bands”

EDIT: I will do a mass accepting of songs each day at 23:59 UTC followed by resetting nominations. Everything in the tagset will still be there, you'll just get to reuse your slots. This will begin tomorrow (September 3).

Cool! I was wondering how last year was going. To follow up and I’m so excited for this!!!!

Either I’m very blind or I’m doing something wrong, but I can’t nominate “One More Light - Linkin Park”, because it’s already in the tagset but I don’t see it? I opted for “In the End” instead.

Try adding (Song) to the end. So "One More Light - Linkin Park (Song)"

Someone might have previously used it as a freeform tag, which causes issues if someone else wants to use it as a fandom.

1. How should covers be nominated?

2. For songs with non-English titles, is it recommended to nominate them with this non-English title, or should they be nominated with a translated title? Or should both the translated and original titles be included in the nomination?

1. For Covers do:
Title of the song - Cover Artist

2. For non-English titles go with what makes the most sense if someone not familiar with the song were to look it up. As long as we have at least one version of the title written in the Latin alphabet we will accept it.

If there's a song I'd like to request as a fandom that was already nominated in the main tagset in a previous year and is still there, do I have to renominate it in the challenge tagset in order to request it?

So if you are signing up with a song as your fandom you are automically opting into Battle of the Bands for that specific request. This list of songs is more for people opting into Battle of the Bands for non-song fandoms.

what is the second way. there is no second way clearly stated here.

Is the second way supposed to be just writing "I am opting in to Battle of the Bands" in my optional details?

Wow, I completely missed that I didn't copy and paste that in. Yes, the second method is just saying in your sign-up that you are opting in to Battle of the Bands and listing specific songs that you are interested in.

Hey! Just letting you know if you accidentally put a song that’s already nominated A03 automatically accepts the nomination with no way to edit! Just figure I let you know! Take care!

That is standard for all tagsets on AO3. Once something is approved or rejected it automatically does that to anyone that nominates the same thing without showing it to mods or giving us any record of it.

Usually it tells you that tag is already in the tagset and not accepted right off the bat, but I guess that's because we're doing fandoms and not Relationship/Characters :D!

Hi! I was just wondering if requests for musical canons that aren't a specific song automatically count as Battle of the Bands? (Music videos, operas, musicals, albums, etc.) Thanks!

Music videos we will allow. As the inspiration for this are the exchanges 300 BPM and Jukebox, which both do individual songs, that is what we will be sticking with.
