I'm bored. Nominations are open now. They will close at the normal time.

Nominations are open!

You can nominate eight fandoms and eight characters from each. Nominations will be open until Tuesday September 8, 23:59 Zulu time.

All traditional fandoms are eligible. RPF has a few special rules that you can read about in the faq. Fanworks as fandoms will be determined on a case by case basis.

Comment on this post about your thoughts on allowing videos and podfics. Please include if you would request or offer either.

Just so you know, I tried to nominate "Fullmetal Alchemist" under the "all media types" tag, but AO3 wouldn't let me. I had to do it instead under the tag of "2003 anime" (which I prefer... but most other people don't). Bizarrely, the error I got was telling me to use the tag I had used, but it didn't accept the submission until I changed it!

...Mind you, I always have difficulties with AO3, so. *shrug*

I don't know what's best. Like I said, I'm probably the only one playing who prefers and would choose the 2003 anime, so I don't know if just one person using that category would skew matchups or anything. (That said, I really don't like and can't write the other canons.) So I'll leave that up to your judgment.

(Oddly, AO3 also claims a tag for one character is canon to the fandom, but not the 2003 anime specifically--even though she only appears there. I don't get it.)

That's certainly fine with me, then. :)

I'm able to nominate the fandom FMA - Brotherhood & Manga, but when I nominate characters for this fandom, I got an error message like this:

"Sorry! We couldn't save this tag set nomination because:

Someone else has already nominated the tag Edward Elric for this set but in fandom Fullmetal Alchemist (Anime 2003). (All nominations have to be unique for the approval process to work.) Try making your nomination more specific, for instance tacking on (Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood & Manga)."

I can get around this by typing something like "Edward Elric (manga)" but it breaks the common tag. I don't know how this will affect things for the approval process and matching. Mods, help?

Definitely want to make sure anyone who really wants the 2003 anime version of canon gets to nominate that separately.

Huh, I wonder if that happened because I *did* specify 2003? /only knows one version, not too sure on how AO3 noms work.

That's the funny thing--it made me use the 2003 anime tag after telling me I couldn't because it had already been used! I totally don't get AO3 and their buggy tagging system at all. :Þ

Anyway, since the first anime is the only FMA in my world (which usually leaves me out of luck in fic exchanges dominated by manga fans), I'm thrilled to know another fan of it is playing. :D

Are we doing the Buffyverse as a single fandom again this year?

Two tricky ones from me. I nominated an urban legend like last year - the alligators in the sewers one instead of the phantom passenger and the lego research institute which was a yuletide fandom but did not end up as a canonized tag, neither the fandom or the characters. I put them as they appear in the yuletide story.

I'd request a video or a fan mix, but I'm not sure if that's fair to ask for a video when I'm only creating a short fic. But then I have no idea what goes into a video, but I have a feeling they're super complicated and time-consuming.

I'm sorry if this is being pushy, especially if you're busy at the moment - but would it be possible to approve the Tolkien-based tag sets? I know several people have been wondering about them and would like to coordinate nominations. Thank you. :)

I'm guessing part of the reason may be that the Tolkien tags are a giant mess: I nommed Elrond under "Lord of the Rings -- JRR Tolkien;" someone else nommed him under all media types and a third person nommed him under the Silm. (I peeked at FFA for once in my life and saw that. I'm blaming morbid curiosity for going there.) I nommed Maglor and saw a nonnie also did; I still don't know how that was possible. And those are just the examples I know about.

I might have a solution for the bookverse side for exchange tag wrangling, but I don't know if the mod's interested in hearing about it now or later.

Good point! I figured those would be dealt with during cleanups, but if there are conflicting and/or confusing nominations, making things public would also help toward fixing it.

(Your morbid curiosity made me laugh. That's pretty much the main reason I do read there as well.)

Yeah, it would. My tag "fix" is really simple, though I don't know if it's actually a workable idea: multi-Age characters such as Elrond go under "JRR Tolkien-- Works" and single-Age characters go with their respective books. Movieverse could be marked with "Jackson movies" but I'm not sure if that would mean people would need to redo their nominations if they wanted those specific characters in the movieverse rather than bookverse. I'm also not sure what to do with the All Media Types noms; the only thing I can think of is to duplicate them in both book and movie 'verses but I don't know if that's possible.

(I only peeked there because of Rare Pairs; I saw there was a Tolkien thread, couldn't help but click, and read with glee that a large part of it was concerned with Trick or Treat. Followed immediately by confusion about the multitude of repeated noms. I normally avoid anon memes due to the rampant negativity; I really don't need to add "would anon approve of this?" to my mental litany of fandom fears.)

I like that idea, and hope mod considers it. :) All Media Types I guess is just that - it's usually listed in the book as well as the movie section of tag sets, so there's no need to replicate it, the system does that automatically.

(Avoiding anon memes is not a bad idea, but it helps keeping in mind that people are much freer with ranting/venting there than in namespace so taking it with a huge grain of salt is a good idea.)

I'm glad to hear that it makes sense outside of my head! Ooh, yes, I did forget about AMT being listed both places. Thanks for the reminder.

(Good point. :) I just try to make a habit of avoiding too much negativity, so I'll keep avoiding them in the future. No point in worrying over something I can easily avoid.)

Right, that does sound quite messy. It's quite easy to determine some things (the Silmarillion and Hobbit book are mostly self-contained, and if the video game is Lord of the Rings Online then that's likely game-only characters as well since there aren't any significant differences when it comes to book characters there so it wouldn't make much sense to nominate them in that category), but book vs. movie often comes with strong opinions, so it's best to try and find a compromise. I'm a little disappointed that it won't be possible to see the Tolkien nominations, but guess that's just how it is. :/

At any rate, I'll be happy to help if that becomes necessary.

Hi! I have a question about nominating characters from two different series with an overlapping character.

The Fate/ franchise is a very complicated, convoluted series. However, there are two recent anime that are the main thing I'm interested in that have a few but not very many fics, so I was interested in nominating a set of characters from both. While these two shows (their show-specific tags are 'Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (Anime 2014)' and 'Fate/Zero' respectively) are within the same continuity, the latter is a prequel to the former. The stories take place ten years apart, and the character overlap in most cases is more like continuity-nod than it is two different shows about the same set of characters. The "main player" casts are very different in terms of composition and dynamic, hence why I'm hoping that both can be nominated rather than lumping them all together. If allowed to nominate both in their separate categories, three of my four characters for each would be different.

But then, there is this character tag: Arturia Pendragon | Saber

She is one of the very few characters who plays a significant, primary role in both anime. (Some time-weirdness and magic are involved.) If it's possible, I'd like to see her in both categories (if you allow them to be separate) because the characters she would be nominated with would be completely different in that case. However, I know that a technical limitation on AO3 doesn't allow me to nominate her twice.

I did not know if this was something you didn't like the sound of, didn't want to deal with, or if there was anything you could say on the matter.

If you only want the whole Fate/ franchise nominated once instead, there are TWO options for that, I think: 'Fate/stay night & Related Fandoms' and 'Fate/stay night - All Media Types,' and I know that we generally hate "All Media Types" for exchanges.

I know this is a weird judgment call most people wouldn't ask you to make, but I just wanted to check.

Thank you!

I got my nominations finished (I'm user failsafe in case reference helps when you get around to reviewing it) and it would seem that some other people have already nominated several of the characters under "Fate/stay night & Related Fandoms" but I still nominated them to try to disambiguate which they were from. However, I'm not really sure which way you'll want to go with that when you get to the disambiguation process (which is why I'm making this comment in case it's helpful) because some of the characters appear in both Fate/stay night from 2006 (which has a different plot, parallel universe type thing) and some from the 2014 anime which I'm nominating for.

I also noticed that it says that "Arturia Pendragon | Saber (Fate/Zero)" is not a canonical tag which is something it's not flagging for the others I had to disambiguate so I just wanted to reiterate that she definitely is in Fate/Zero.

I feel so bad for making you sort through something that is as convoluted as this so if there's any way I personally can help you with knowing where people go (since they have repeat appearances in quite different things) once you decide what to do, I'll be glad to try to help.
