This post is about how specific fandoms will be grouped or separated out.  If a fandom is listed here with the parts being separated out then any All Media Types nomination of that fandom will be rejected.  This is your chance, between now and August 31, to make suggestions on how certain fandoms are handled.  You may make suggestions for fandoms not on this list.  When making suggestions include the realistic pros and cons of your suggestion. 

Another post will go up later with general guidelines.  This post is just for discussing fandoms.

Is "Dragon Age" by itself an umbrella, or meant to be Dragon Age: Origins? (I suggest the latter.)

I also would like to recommend splitting The Witcher into Witcher 1, Witcher 2, Witcher 3, and Witcher books.

They are all going to be separate fandoms this year. The first part is more of just a section header so that all the information about an overall fandom is grouped together.

For the Witcher you suggest that they be separated out, but you haven't provided any information about why. Please, elaborate.

I was thinking that both the Dangan Ronpa and Pokemon games should go under one main umbrella for each series, just like they have in previous years, and each Fire Emblem should be separate, if everyone else agrees?

From what I've read, I think it would make the most sense to have everything together except for Dangan Ronpa V3, due to being in a different continuity and not yet being available in English.

Do you mean the main video game series grouped together or every video game that has ever been called Pokemon?

Not sure if this applies in this category setup, but "Fullmetal Alchemist" should differentiate between Anime 2003 and Brotherhood & Manga. The two versions go in completely different directions, and authors tend to want to write only one or the other.

Star Wars:

What about the material that bridges between trilogies (e.g. Aftermath, various comics)? Or should we just nominate under whichever of the headings fits best in terms of timeline/shared characters?

Also, I think there probably needs to be a separate category for Legends and/or stuff set in the past/future. (The specific examples I'm thinking of are the Knights of the Old Republic games, which take place ~4000 BBY, in what in Legends was the Old Republic era but in the new timeline is before the Republic even got started, and the Legacy comics which are set a century after the Original Trilogy, in the Legends timeline. Neither of those would be a comfortable fit in any of the categories you've already got. A single "Legends" fandom would probably be OK, but it could be split down further if desired.)

Doctor Who:

Very minor thing, but the revived version is (2005), not (2004).

I'm assuming the various spinoffs from the interregnum should be nominated under (1963)?

There are some characters who could appear under more than one of those categories (Sarah Jane is the obvious example, having been in three of the four, including being the title character of one). Presumably that will be OK with proper disambiguation.

Also, I don't know if it's likely to get any nominations, but there is a more recent spinoff: Class.

The list isn’t meant to be a be-all end-all list of every possible thing that could be nominated. Some of these fandoms are very large and it would be time consuming for me to go and research every possible thing that exists when they might not be nominated. I opted for including ones that I have seen nominated fairly recently to give people an idea how I wanted to handle specific fandoms. This would be a very long post if I listed every possible subcategory for DC, Marvel, Star Trek, Star Wars, and Tolkien.

Star Wars
If it’s not in the movie/series then nominate it separately. Knights of the Old Republic games should be nominated separately. Legacy comics should be nominated as Legacy comics. I’m open to seeing how participants want Legends and other extra media to be treated.

The movie with Paul McGann can be nominated as part of Doctor Who (1963). Books, audio plays, Curse of Fatal Death, Peter Cushing’ movie, etc should be nominated separately.

If a character appears in more than one part of the fandom, like Sarah Jane Smith, they are eligible for all the parts that they appeared in.

I'm not a fan of splitting the Dragon Age games up because many of the characters could be nominated for multiple games, and I feel that would create unnecessary redundancy. I also disagree with the person above wanting the Witcher games split up for much the same reason.

Edit: Would you consider allowing people to nominate relationships this year?

Agreed on both games. I can kind of see why some loosely connected franchises might be split by title, but the Dragon Age and Witcher games don't feel sufficiently independent from each other that it merits nominating the same character multiple times. Details of whether one wants to read about eg. Culllen in Ferelden, in Kirkwall, or in the Inquisition could go in notes/prompts, without having to request him as a character three separate times.

There's a webcomic called Stand Still, Stay Silent, which recently spawned a spinoff computer game, City of Hunger, that'll be playable in alpha mode soon (within two or three weeks, though not all of the plot may be revealed yet). It's something of a canon AU, with the same cast of characters as the original comic, but set in a sci-fi future on an ice planet, not a post-apocalypse fantasy adventure. AO3 is currently handling its tag as synonymous with SSSS.

I think I'd prefer it to be handled seperately because the setup is so different, and some of the characters are in very different roles dependent on the circumstances, and (according to the creator), prior knowledge of SSSS canon is not necessary for understanding CoH, but at the same time the cast is the same... which is to say, I'll go with whatever the consensus is when nominations start.

The Dallas 2014 staging uses a contemporary, dystopian setting instead of 19th century France, and Shoujo Cosette is an anime based on Les Misérables which changes the ending and introduces several original side characters.

The pros of having them as seperated fandoms are that people who want to request/offer these more unknown adaptations could actually get matched on them. And I can't really see any cons because people who only want to offer/receive fic/art based on the novel would still have that option.

I'd like to nominate MCU characters from Doctor Strange and Spider-Man: Homecoming. Should they be placed under the blanket fandom of Marvel Cinematic Universe, under the names of the specific movies, or under MCU but disambiguated somehow?

I'm wondering how to nominate for Rick Riordan's Demigods series--on AO3 they're split up into Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, and The Trials of Apollo, but they all take place in the same universe and whereas the Kane Chronicles and Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard are more loosely connected to the other series, POJ/HOO/TOA share a lot of characters and continuity.

Oh and also--I saw that the character Michael Madsen has been approved in Stand Still Stay Silent. There are two Michael Madsens in Stand Still Stay Silent, though, so you should probably ask the nominator which one they meant?

I'm having trouble with some of my last-minute noms for Fate/Grand Order because somebody has apparently already nominated the characters (with their canonical F/GO disambiguators) under "Fate/stay night and Related Fandoms." The characters I've been unable to nominate are Mash Kyrielight and the Female Protagonist of F/GO; neither of them appear in F/sn or any of the offshoot material that's part of the same immediate continuity.

I don't think the Fate/ series should be combined because it involves a lot of separate continuities/alternate timelines across multiple media, some of which involve the same characters, so if the whole franchise is one fandom then it becomes impossible to offer/request specifically the parts of the canon that one knows.

I've stopped accepting Fate nominations for the moment but go ahead and nominate under Fate/Grand Order. I need to get a final idea of what Fate related nominations are before I can decide how to merge/split things up. For the ones that have been nominated under other parts of the fandom just use a slightly different disambiguation so it will be accepted.

In most exchanges everyone uses the All Media Types tag for Fate/. I may have to rethink this for future rounds.

Hi, just wondering how to nominate Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel: the Series. Angel was a main character in BtVS for the first three seasons before getting a spinoff, and many other characters have had crossover appearances or even moved from one show to the other permanently.

Should I nominate as Buffyverse, or as Buffy the Vampire Slayer & Related Fandoms, or as two separate fandoms?

Hey, for the MCU tags, why are the character tags changed to something like Loki (Moss Covered Unicorn)? That's not the canon tags, and I thought we were supposed to use the canon tag? I'm just confused as to why this had to be tagged that way as it wasn't mentioned it would be here. Is there a good reason why it's like this? Is it possible to have it changed back to the canon tag, please?

Because AO3 has been wrangling the disambiguated versions into other fandoms. If I change them to something like "Loki (MCU)" the tag will wander into other fandoms like Agents of SHIELD, Marvel 616, X-Men movies, etc. This is a problem that I have dealt with for many years. I am tired of fighting over it so if it is fandom that I know is prone to wandering tags they get something completely ridiculous to make sure they haven't been wrangled into the wrong fandoms. It will not be changed to the canon tag because it would ruin the tagset.
