Nominations are now open!

 

Some fandoms have specific guidelines.  Check them out here.  For fandoms that are split up I did not list every single possible subcategory for every one of those fandoms. 

 

You can nominate six fandoms with six characters each.

 

You may nominate generic original characters such as Original Male Elf, Original Sailor Senshi, Original Tag Wrangler, etc.  We will not be accepting specific original characters.

 

Do not use any fan nicknames when nominating characters.  Describe the character instead. 

 

We will not be accepting group or relationship nominations. If there is a character that is a special case in that they could sort of count as one individual or many then leave a comment to explain it to me.

 

The category of Original Works is allowed.  Crossover Fandoms is not.  All crossovers should be limited to your optional details.

 

If you participated in EveryWoman and want to know if canon helpers will be used in this exchange the answer is: no.  As long as Trick or Treat matches on just characters I won’t be using canon helpers here.

 

There are three rules for RPF:

1. For contemporary RPF the individuals must be over the age of 18.

2. Non-famous friends and family are not eligible

3. The person in question can be removed from the tagset at the request of the individual

 

I will be prioritizing fandoms that are easy for me to accept.  If you want to get your nominations accepted faster then here is how to help:

1.      Check the fandom guidelines to see if your fandom should be done a specific way.

2.       Disambiguate your characters.  It makes it less likely for me to make mistakes and is faster.  Disambiguating never hurts.

3.       Make sure you are spelling the character’s name correctly, especially if the character’s name is spelt differently in different canons. 

4.       Link me info!  If you want to link me to something like the fandom wiki page for each character then that is great!  TVtropes character list page?  That could work.  IMDB? Wikipedia?  If I don’t know a fandom I have to look it up and this will speed things up especially for small fandoms, Transformers, Tolkien, and comics.

I'm not the mod, obviously, but from the tag set controller's perspective there's no way to tell who nominated what -- names aren't attached to nominations in any way. The only thing I can suggest is to check 'My Nominations' once you've logged back in -- has the form cleared, or are your nominations there?

So I'm nominating some interesting things in LOTR book fandom, specifically:

The Elm Tree that Doesn't Exist on the North Downs
A Fox Passing Through the Wood on Business of His Own
Unnamed Southron

These are all specific, individual characters in the books, and the Unnamed Southron even appears in the Extended Edition of the Two Towers movie. The way I've done it is the best way I know how of specifically nominating these particular characters, and indeed, I accepted the Elm Tree and the Unnamed Southron into the Innumerable Stars tagset exactly as I've done them here.

Three of my fandoms are canonical in the archive.

For Computer Detectives and Morgan Swift, I could submit photos of the appropriate pages where the character names are mentioned. I tried searching for full names on the internet and eventually had to get the books down.

For Ethel Morton
All six books can be found on Project Gutenberg. Note that the series is a little inconsistent in formating the Ethel "Blue" & Ethel "Brown" nicknames but the other names should be findable by using search in the html version.

When I refreshed my nominations, AO3 decided to make three copies of my fifth fandom nomination, and I can't delete them or edit the form at all because no matter what I do it's convinced I'm trying to nominate seven fandoms.

Congrats, you've managed to encounter a variation of a bug that I've never seen before. I've seen AO3 duplicate fandoms like that before, but never to the point that it went to seven fandoms.

Just get the email to me before sign-ups close but once I add them in you can't change them.

I think I must have edited my noms right as you approved them, and that made a duplication happen. I originally nommed "The Ruby in the Smoke (2006)", with characters Frederick Garland (Ruby in the Smoke), Jim (Ruby in the Smoke), Nicholas Bedwell (Ruby in the Smoke), Rosa Garland (Ruby in the Smoke), and Sally Lockhart (Ruby in the Smoke). Then I realized there was a second movie in the series, so I shouldn't just nominate the one movie, I should nominate the series. So I changed the fandom to "Sally Lockhart - TV Movies" and the character disambiguations to match.

But like I said, I think you must have approved the original noms right as I was changing them, because now both sets are in the tagset. (All the Ruby in the Smoke characters are in the "Unassociated Characters & Relationships" section.)

If you could go ahead and delete the Ruby in the Smoke fandom and the associated characters, leaving "Sally Lockhart - TV Movies" and characters as is, I think that would clear it right up! Thanks. Sorry about that.

Vorkosigan Saga by Lois McMaster Bujold is a series of science fiction novels. There's a fan wiki for the site.

The characters I nominated were:
- Aral Vorkosigan

- Aral Vorkosigan's First Wife (the AO3 canonical for her)
Annoyingly, the canon does not ever give the lady a name. We know that she was a Vor from the Vorruyter family. The article on Aral Vorkosigan sums up what we know of her from the first book, Shards of Honor (also found as part of the omnibus Cordelia's Honor, which is how it's in print today):

When he was twenty, he was married to a woman two years younger of the Vorrutyer family. The marriage was arranged by his father, and the bride was the sister of his friend and fellow lieutenant Ges Vorrutyer. Vorkosigan was often away from home, and his wife took two lovers. When informed about her lovers by his friend Ges, Vorkosigan challenged both of them to duels to avenge his honor.[6]

Vorkosigan killed them both, but it was assumed that they had killed each other and he escaped penalty. Shortly afterward his wife apparently committed suicide with a plasma arc, though it was rumored at the time that he had killed her for infidelity.

Not sure if you're cleaning up nominations as you go or at some later point, but in case it's the former, I thought I'd point out an error I spotted in the Wolf 359 (Radio) set.

"Anne's Mother (Wolf 359)" - She actually has a canonical name: Kate García. Here is her creator confirming as much. If you'd prefer tags to stick with what's in the actual canon (as opposed to what's confirmed outside of it), she's named in the podcast proper as Kate, at least, and she is regularly tagged with that name on AO3.

Blue Guy and Red Freaks are the in-game names given to the protagonist and the enemies, while the Narrator is the person behind the screens that communicate with the protagonist.

I nominated the Red Freaks as one character due to the fact that they are stated in canon to be of one mind, and "all the same."

Most of my nominations are straightforward - things I or someone else have requested in previous years, nominated in the same format. (I have nominated characters for Liáo zhāi zhì yì | Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio - Pú Sōnglíng the way you advised me to in previous years.)

The two that aren't already canonical are Youth on Horseback - Anton Pieck, a piece of artwork you can see here, and Les Contes d'Hoffmann - Offenbach/Barbier which is a slightly weird case - there is a canonical AO3 tag for it, but it's misspelt, with Hoffmann having only one n, even though it's spelt correctly in all the canonical character disambiguations. I mean, I have no strong feelings about it - if it's easier to use the existing though incorrect AO3 tag, obviously that's fine. I do have a vague memory of making a support request at some point to get the spelling corrected, but I think that was getting on for a year ago...

Checking the status of my nominations, I'm seeing that one character hasn't been approved yet and I realize I didn't think it through while nominating her, sorry:

Thing is, the character has been around for 27 years but we've only learned her surname this June, so her canonical is "Diane (Twin Peaks)".

My nomination is, of course, for Twin Peaks' Diane. Should I edit my nomination to "Diane (Twin Peaks)" or will the mods do it?
